Game 2 of the unofficial semi-finals of the 2017 Tortugas Open will see defending champion 40-goal La Dolfina face 31-goal La Aguada Las Monjitas today in Palermo (4 p.m. local time, field 1).
In Monday’s convincing 20-6 victory over La Irenita, the quartet of 10-goalers for La Dolfina looked as dangerous as ever, with all four players scoring at least four goals apiece from the field. Led by Adolfo Cambiaso’s seven goals (four from the field, three from the penalty line), La Dolfina’s potent offensive attack was evident as they shot at goal 27 times in their opening game. The combined 18 shot attempts from David Stirling and Pablo MacDonough led the attack for La Dolfina. Along with their offense, La Dolfina was also effective defensively in their opening game, holding La Irenita to 3-for-13 shooting from the field. The ability of La Dolfina to quickly transition from defense to offense puts any opponent on the defensive and will be an area to watch in their semi-final matchup against La Aguada Las Monjitas.
Using a quick start and effective shooting throughout the game, La Aguada LM put together a strong team performance in a 17-8 victory over La Irenita. Playing in place of injured Eduardo Novillo Astrada, Alfredo Bigatti was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field, leading the offensive attack. The combination of Bigatti and Alejandro Novillo Astrada was the key for La Aguada LM in their opening game as they finished with five and seven goals respectively, along with five throw-in wins each to lead all players. That offensive performance allowed Miguel and Ignacio Novillo Astrada to protect the back end of the field and limit the chances for La Irenita. Against La Dolfina, La Aguada LM will need to protect against fouling. In the previous game 14 fouls against La Irenita led to six penalty opportunities for their opponent. That’s something they can’t afford against La Dolfina.
-La Dolfina shot at goal 27 times in their opening game, shooting 59%. La Aguada LM shot at goal 18 times, for 72%.
-La Dolfina held their opponent to 0-for-5 shooting in the first three chukkers.
-La Aguada LM controlled throw-ins against La Irenita, winning 17 of 29 throw-ins.
-La Dolfina was only 3-for-6 from the penalty line, while La Aguada LM was 4-for-6.
