Nic Roldan is on high horsepower as La Indiana prepares to go up against La Bamba de Areco in the semifinals of the 2018 Cartier Queen’s Cup today. For the season his teammate Facundo Pieres lent him two powerful Ellerstina mares, Americana and Roca (watch for Roca in the second or third chukker, and possibly the last). Roldan is also playing a couple of La Indiana horses, as well as his personal favorites from his own string. Here’s how Roldan describes his personal top three mares:

- New York, an American Thoroughbred bought from Mariano Aguerre and Nick Manifold: “A lot of power, good handle, great sides.”

- Miriam, an Australian TB bought from La Indiana three years ago: “A beautiful, beautiful mare. She has everything! Power, stop, handle.”

- Cubana: an American TB bought from Kris Kampsen: “Powerful, good mouth, pretty turnkey like my others.”

“This is the most competitive year England has had in a long time. We haven’t had one easy game. They’ve all been tough. We’ve got a really tough semifinal against La Bamba,” says Roldan. “The good thing is that we’ve been getting better and better every game, which is a confidence booster for us, and we’re really starting to gel. It’s always a lot of fun to play with La Indiana because they’re such a great organization. And of course it’s been an amazing experience playing with Facundo. Hopefully this is our year.”

La Indiana claimed a resounding 12-6 victory over Emlor in Sunday’s quarterfinals on the Queen’s Ground at Guards Polo Club. La Bamba de Areco secured their semifinal slot by defeating Les Lions in a 13-9 performance Sunday. Park Place and Valiente are through to the semis after their Saturday wins (Park Place def RH Polo 9-5, and Valiente def Talandracas 10-9).

The semifinals are this Wednesday: Valiente v. Park Place at noon; La Indiana v. La Bamba de Areco at 4 p.m. All times are local. Games are live streamed and uploaded daily at https://www.guardspoloclub.com/guards-tv. MAKE THIS A HOTLINK PLEASE
